Our Blog Survey

Hi, welcome to our blog. Do you write a blog? If so, please take our survey. It is available in English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Full details can be found at:

It should take at most 15 minutes. Most people finish it sooner, and many of our participants commented that the questions we interesting and enlightening. Plus, since we will publically publish our results, you'll be contributing to a wider understanding of what blogging means to different cultures!

To maximize the validity of our survey results, we need as many responses as possible (ideally several hundred) from as wide range a demographic as possible. Most importantly, we need more results from different countries. Right now, we are lacking responses from non-English speakers. Additionally, we are very interested in responses from English speakers who don't reside in the United States. Of course, we very much welcome those in the US to still fill out the survey. =)

This blog is basically meant to help spread the word. Interestingly, when we asked people to fill out our blog survey, they often asked us back, "do you have a blog?" So here it is--we'll keep you updated soon on how many people have filled out each survey, as well as on our thoughts on the analysis of the data.

Please feel free to leave comments. We are really interested in hearing what you think of our survey. Help propagate the survey through the "blogosphere"--post it in your entries and forward it to your friends. Thanks!

Hi -- I just finished the blog survey. I realize you can't change the survey instrument in the middle, but I wanted to make a comment on question #11 -- "does blogging connect me with more people like me" It does, but for me one of the important things about blogging is that it connects me with people *not* like me -- people living in other countries, people with radically different political opinons than my own, people of different ages.

So often life channels us into communities of people exactly like ourselves -- same socioeconomic class, same race, same educational level, same age. Booooooo---ring! Blogging is an antidote to the narrowing down of life.

Cool survey, I'll bring it to the attention of the New Zealand blogging community.

On a semi-related topic, I think it would be really interesting to get an idea of the personality traits of bloggers; see if there are any noticable trends, etc.

It wouldn't require any great organisation: I have in mind a fairly unofficial, unscientific, self-selection process. I think that would be good enough for the purposes of general interest (it's not as if I'm doing a paper on it like you guys).

Simply bring to people's attention the IPIP personality test (recommended by industrial psychologists) available online, and suggest that they post their results on their blog.*

I've done so already (see link below), and I know of two others who have followed suit, but it would be good to get a few more people on board. If it caught on, the response could grow exponentially (as I imagine links to this site may well do over the next few days...)

* = For ease of reference, the links to all such results pages could then be collated into a single, publicly available, list. Anyone (with a statistical background) could then analyse the results further, if they so wished.

I imagine anyone reading this blog might well be interested in such an idea. More details here.
